Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Requirements

To be eligible for the WA Battery Scheme, customers will need to participate in a VPP product.

  • All customers will be able to subscribe to the VPP product offered by their electricity retailer, Synergy or Horizon Power Community Wave.
    • Both retailer products are designed to share value with the customer
    • These products have been designed to ensure they are fair and reasonable and share the value of orchestration with customers.
    • As VPPs evolve and mature, VPP products will also evolve and mature.
  • Synergy customers will be able to choose an alternative VPP product, as long as it meets the following criteria:
    • the alternative product is offered by the supplier of the customer’s battery and is compatible with the customer’s equipment;
    • the alternative product is designed to share the value of orchestration with the customer; and
    • the alternative product is backed by genuine value streams in the form of market or service contracts (such as contracts to provide Non-Co-optimised Essential System Services (NCESS) or Network Support Services (NSS)) through Synergy as the parent aggregator for residential customers.

REWARDS – Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Requirements

There are some rewards for registering with Synergy Virtual Power Plant program.

Synergy Battery Rewards is part of the Virtual Power Plant, designed to create system reliability for everyone and reward customers who can support the energy system through activations when needed.

Here’s how you could benefit from Synergy Battery Rewards:

  • Earn Activation Credits for every activation event
    Your stored energy is valuable to the energy system, so during a Battery Rewards Activation Event, you could earn 70 cents for every kilowatt hour (kWh)** of electricity exported to the energy system. These are called ‘Activation Credits’*. This is up to the maximum capacity of your battery during an Activation Event. To help you compare, Synergy customers on a standard Synergy A1 tariff usually pays 31.5823c per kWh** of electricity they use.
  • Limited Activation Events per Annum
    Under Battery Rewards, Synergy would only manage your battery for a maximum of 30 activation events per year, with each event being a maximum of 6 hours and limited to one charge/discharge cycle per day. All other times, your battery remains available for your own use and benefit. When the energy system needs to draw on household energy assets, such as on the hottest days in summer, a Battery Rewards Activation Event will occur.
  • Receive Energy Offset Credits
    To make sure you are better off on the product, you’ll also receive Energy Offset Credits* (in addition to Activation Credits of 70 c/kWh) to cover energy costs during the Activation Standby window. These Energy Offset Credits* are designed to cover any consumption charges for energy you use from the energy system while Synergy is managing your battery during a standby window for it to be available for activation use.

Who do I contact for installing my batteries!

Installing a battery for a Solar system is not everybody’s cup of tea. It requires an in- depth knowledge of Australian standards and wiring rules, to ensure that they are installed in a ‘safe area’, wired to specifications, and fulfilling all safety aspects.
